Kaws on CBS

10:29 PM Reporter: LavishLivez.com 0 Responses

This segment profiles the artist known as KAWS, former Graffiti (tag) artist turned painter and designer of limited edition toys and clothing. This segment also features some cool clips of KAWS' art, displayed in Pharrell Williams' Miami Home and Kanye West's latest album cover and billboard.

You can catch his next exhibition,
"KAWS, The Long Way Home," February 21,— April 04, 2009 at the Honor Fraser Gallery in LA

http://www.honorfraser.com/?s=upcoming
or
http://www.honorfraser.com

"I just started simply through graffiti and drawing on my skateboard and painting on walls and getting that small recognition," said KAWS, known to his family as Brian Donnelly.

KAWS graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a BFA in illustration in 1996. After graduation, KAWS briefly worked for Disney as a freelance animator painting backgrounds. He also contributed to the animated series 101 Dalmations, Daria and Doug.

He began his career as a graffiti artist growing up in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Later moving to NYC in the 1990s, KAWS started subverting imagery on billboards, bus shelters and phone booth advertisements. These reworked advertisements were at first left alone, lasting for up to several months, but as KAWS' popularity skyrocketed, the ads became increasingly sought after.

In addition to NY, KAWS has done work in Paris, London, Berlin and Tokyo.

In the late 90s, KAWS began to design and produce limited edition vinyl toys, "an instant hit with the global art toy-collecting community,"especially in Japan, where this genre is well respected and widespread. More toys and later clothing were made for Original Fake, a recent collaborative store with Medicom Toy, in the Aoyama district of Tokyo where an original limited edition product is released each week.

KAWS has also participated in other commercial collaborations with Takahashi for Undercover, snowboard projects with Burton, and sneakers with Nike and Vans.

His most recent collaboration was with Comme des Garçons.

KAWS' acrylic paintings and sculpture have many repeating images, all meant to be universally understood, surpassing languages and cultures.

One of KAWS' early series, Package Paintings, was made in 2000. This series, entitled The Kimpsons, subverted the famous American cartoon, The Simpsons. KAWS explains that he "found it weird how infused a cartoon could become in people's lives; the impact it could have, compared to regular politics."

In addition, KAWS has reworked other familiar icons such as Mickey Mouse, the Michelin Man and the Smurfs.

Through all of his projects, KAWS has successfully blurred the line between fine art and mass-produced merchandise. He uses his products to allow his imagery to infiltrate a larger audience than that of the fine art world.

The artist is currently an active member in both the commercial and fine art communities.

His work is included in the traveling exhibition "Beautiful Losers," which started at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center and will be traveling through 2009 throughout the US and Europe.

SELECTED SOLO EXHIBITIONS (forthcoming)

Plastic Culture, Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston, Great Britain

KaNo X Toy Qube- Hi-Def

11:25 PM Reporter: LavishLivez.com 0 Responses

It was a very successful weekend for both Toy Qube and KaNo. Selling out all of the KaNo Troopers and both the Hi-Def and the GID Bodegas being a great hit, KaNo has satisfied the fiends. Even though the Hi-Def was nearly all sold out at NYCC there are still a few left over at Toy Qube and their online store. Make sure you make your purchase before they're gone forever!

New York Comic Con Brief Re-Cap!

9:42 AM Reporter: LavishLivez.com 0 Responses

New York Comic Con, wow.. where to even begin. As soon as you walk into the Javits Center, you can hear faint sounds of chanting, it's not clear what is being yelled, but it was in-sync and strong. As you walk closer and closer to the entrance of NYCC it sounded like I was in a medieval age and in a different planet..... at the same time. I saw people in all sorts of costumes, from Starwars to Naruto, entertaining to say the least. Supposedly this event was a small one, but it was HUGE!! (like 2 football fields) I hear that the one in San Fran is 10 times the size.

As I walk towards Toy Qubes booth, I can't help it but just to take in the new experience and over hear the different languages of all gamers and collectors alike.  Four minutes, yea it took me 4 minutes to find them, I reached to Toy Qubes booth and it was surprisingly small, but of course it packed heat!  The vertical Ikea glass cases was filled with TQ exclusives such as the hammerhead, Hi-Def, and many customs by KaNo, Brent Nolasco and some others.

While over at the TQ booth, I met up with KaNo and PON who also attended the KRNY event right after.  I went to go explore the place and I find out KaNo had his own booth!! , and of course I had to show some love. ( got free stickers from him lol)

I saw many familiar faces and a whole lot of new ones, but all in all it was a new and great experience for me.  My love for toys and art got stronger that day and I believe it will continue.

Anyways enough talking, on with the pictures!!

Nigo’s The Simpsons Inspired KAWS “Kimpsons” Painting

9:33 AM Reporter: LavishLivez.com 0 Responses

Nigo, the creator/owner of Bape, is also the proud owner of this painting. A painting of the Simpsons family hovering over the most famous couch in the T.V world was done by the New York based artist, Kaws. It seems that Nigo paid Kaws to paint him a 1 of 1 piece or who know, Kaws could be sucking up to the head honcho of A Bathing Ape.

In Collaboration with ToyQube KaNo presents to you 10 inches of fully articulated HI-DEF goodness. This is by far KaNo's favorite toy due to the fact that it looks exactly like his drawn concept. Toy Qube- Grand Re-Opening Party!

9:26 AM Reporter: LavishLivez.com 0 Responses

Yesterday, Toy Qube held their grand re-opening party at the new location and it would be an understatement to say it was a successful night for the TQ team.  Over 120 people came to the party and couple of major artists came through as well, if you were not there than you missed out, but no worries I got you.

Many local artists showed Toy Qube and their adoring fans love by coming through the party and staying there, beginning to end.  I was honored with such pleasure by being introduced by Keith of Toy Qube, to some of the artists.  Andrew Bell was the first person I was introduced at the party, he created the "Lotus Kanser".. cool guy.  Secondly I was introduced to Kano, who brought us "Hi-Def",  very laid back and has a sense of humor.  Lastly I was introduced to Mike a.k.a NEMO, he designed the "Haremungous", I also learned that he sculpted my favorite toys, "Sharky" and "Hammerhead" of Toy Qube and as soon as I learned this... he instantaneously became my favorite artist/sculptor, right behind Keithing.

The party was full of energy and excitement, even through the party people were buying toys and some were even trading.  This was my third time at a art/toy party, but I can say it will be hard to top this.  Having two floors is of course an advantage, first floor for the customers and fans, the basement for friends and family of Toy Qube.  The basement is pimped out!!  Bar, toy displays, bar, nice red leather couches, and did I say bar?

Custom Of The Day-Mizzee- Saw Dunk

12:51 AM Reporter: LavishLivez.com 0 Responses
Inspired by James Wan's movie, Mizzee customized a Nike dunk high and it was only right to call "Saw". This custom features black on black chains which runs through out the whole shoe, front to back. It also has black eyelets and a silver door knocker-esque ring (in the back), but he added a little SBTG swag into it to add more flavor into the customs. A croc skin lace buckle takes this shoe to another level.

The right shoe has art based on the reversed bear trap seen where Amanda was in, which also was the promotional movie poster. And the left shoe has artwork depicting jigsaws puppet. This custom is very detailed which makes this one of a kind.

You can contact Mizzee on ISS under the username Mizzee.
Or check out his myspace.

Check a video of the shoes on the bottom.
